Probably my favorite app for streaming horror, Tubi provides the opportunity to catch up on movies for free. Their movie catalog for the genre is surprisingly quite good, but there are many bad ones too. This list narrows down the best ones for you. Check back for monthly updates to this list!
The Conjuring 1 & 2
In the early 2010's there was a desire for classic horror stories containing quality scares. Enter The Conjuring, a film about a family terrorized by a demonic presence in their new home. The land on which the family resides contains an evil so powerful, only the likes of the infamous Ed and Lorraine Warren can detain it. The Conjuring wisely utilizes the true stories of Ed and Lorraine to add a sense of realism to the film, which instills a heightened degree of fear in viewers. The setting is perfect, and the scares are creative and timely. The Conjuring is widely regarded one of the best horror films of the 21st century.
The Conjuring 2 followed up the success of its predecessor in similar fashion. The story is loosely based on another case of the paranormal fighting duo, Ed and Lorraine. A family in London is tormented by what they believe is the ghost of their home's previous owner. They soon request the help of the Warrens, and what unfolds is truly frightening. In this film we see the demon, Valak, for the first time. While not as memorable as The Conjuring, it stands as an impressive sequel with new scares and a storyline that feels fresh.
Jeepers Creepers
One of the prized jewels of B-movies, we have Jeepers Creepers. In the month of October, you're sure to catch me rewatching this. What Jeepers Creepers has going for it is Justin Long and Gina Phillips, the leading protagonists. Because of their honest portrayal, we are gifted likeable characters to spend time with. Additionally, Jeepers Creepers has a scary villain, sincerely funny moments, and an ending you'll never forget.
Nosferatu the Vampyre
They say remakes are a waste of time, but this one is an exception! Nosferatu the Vampyre retells the tale of Nosferatu in chilling fashion. Herzog's feature respects the past while adding new elements to a historic legend. Selecting Pernštejn Castle for the setting, casting Klaus Kinski as Count Orlok, and crafting an unsettling soundtrack were all A+ decisions made by the crew. If you find yourself avoiding Nosferatu because of its age, then give this remake a try.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
When you have the opportunity to watch the origin of a subgenre, you do it. The backwoods subgenre got its start in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Sweat, grime, and blood are all common to this 1974 classic emphasizing a simple plot with terrifying villains who kill without reason. The killer we see often, Leatherface, is iconic as ever wielding his chainsaw and mask of human flesh.
Martyrs
There's a subgenre of horror that many cannot stomach, and that's the torture subgenre; Martyrs resides at the top of it. Immediately we are presented a young child, battered and bruised, running in terror from something. Lucie escaped the place she was being cruelly tortured and experimented on. Most of the film after that opening is set 10-15 years later when Lucie is a young adult. She finds her abusers and enacts revenge with one of her friends, Anna. What transpires is a whirlwind of an experience, and one that is shocking in every sense of the word.
